  1. 1. Isolated children are deprived of contact with others, while, feral children encounter other feral children. Next, isolated children may only have one "caregiver," whereas, feral children lack adult caregivers. Feral children may be strong, where isolated children would most likely be scared.

    2. Victor appeared as if he was human, but he had the behavior of an animal. He lacked the skills that the average human obtains. Dr. Itard probably wanted to be discrete about his studies with Victor, hence the "Forbidden Experiment." Maybe this type of study was looked down on at this time.

    3. Since, Genie was locked in the same room for about thirteen years, she lacked any social skills. Genie was very similar to Victor because they did not show the behavior of an average human. Researchers probably believed that the work put into Victor would help Genie become more human-like. However, due to extensive child abuse, Genie never really acted "normal."

    4. Because of extreme child abuse, Genie's mother was not able to see her. In my opinion, the mother should have been able to see her if the visits were moderated with another person there.

    5. Based on ferals and isolates, five behaviours or attitudes that help humans function within a society are language/communication, interactions with other people, experiencing many different enviornments/surroundings, being loved as a child, and being educated

    6. Even though Dr. Harlow's experiment depicted an infant's love their mother, it was unethical because the chimps were fearful of the outside world and did not survive as well as if they had their actual mother by their side when they were babies.

    7. When a child is abused and is isolated from the outside world for awhile, he/she will most likely not survive in life and will lack basic social skills. However, if a child receives love, they will live a positive life. Children who do not encounter the outside enviornment will not develop and mature well. All children need love and the experience of being outside at an early age.

  2. 1.The difference between isolate and feral children is isolate children are complete cut off from the world and cannot function, where feral children are among animals and learn their qualities from them.

2.The title of "Forbidden Experiment" says that the study of Victor by Itard was looked down upon, maybe because it was considered unfair since Victor was being treated only as an experiment.

3.They would look to Itard's work to help Genie because they both were at the same level and acted the same way.

4.Yes, in some cases a parent's right over a child should be taken away, like in Genie's case. The mother messed up her own child's growth because she neglected her. If the parent is not taking care of their kid and have no interest in their health of happiness the child should be taken away.

    5. We need language and to know how to speak to communicate with others, we need to show emotions to let people know how feel and what bothers us, we need to know how to walk to be able to get places and do things, we need to be able to know right from wrong, we need to know how to laugh and be happy to live a healthy life.

6.I think it was ethical. Monkeys are know to be the closest animal to human beings. The monkeys actions going to the warmth and not the food is most likely what a human child would do too.

7.The case in China in 1983 where the young girl kept in a pigpen oinked when she was hungry shows that since the girl was raised with pigs she thought the way to live was how the pigs did, showing that person experiences determine behaviors.
The story of Victor and Genie both show how nurture determines how the kids act. They were both given little contact to humans and weren't taught how to live, they were expected to survive on their own. Now they have no emotions or reactions, do not know how to interact or walk.

  3. 1. Isolate is children isolated from all human contact. Feral children are children who can not overcome the years of abuse and neglect.

    2. The "Forbidden Experiment" reveals that Itard's wanted to see if Victor can ever learn to get use living like a human after living like an animal in the forest for years. Itard wanted to help him discover a language and learn the way to live like a normal human being.

    3. The researchers worked with Genie looked to Itard's work to help Genie because she was locked in a room since she was 14 months and it caused her to not have language, she could not walk right and she showed absolutely no emotion to anything. When she was taken in as research subject her progress was limited just like Victor.

    4. If a mother is like Genies I think that the parents right over child should be taken away. Even if the mother had no part in the disgusting tragedy she still let it happen. She put her child in danger and ruined his/her life. A parents right should not be returned if it is a situation like this. The child deserves better. A criteria that should be used to determine when this should happen is to study the child and the parents and the environment that the child was around. There should be a strong investigation.

    5. There are a few behaviors and attitudes that help humans function within a society. For example, having a language and being able to speak to other humans, being able to walk right and eat like other humans. Also, being around parents makes a child have behaviors and attitudes, they follow everything they see.

    6. I think Dr. Harlows use of rhesus monkeys were ethical because a child needs to be around its mother while growing up so they are loved and cared for. When the infant monkeys were separated they were not getting attention because it was a fake mother. It just provided food and warmth. When it got older the monkey did not know how to love its children and be a parent. Being alone affected them. That is just like locking a baby in a room for years, they come out knowing nothing and are not loved and cared for right.

    7. If a child just not get the love and care that he/she needs than it will stay with them in the future, they could possibly be afraid to settle down with someone. If a child is abused and isolated from the outside they will not develop like they should. They will not have a language, social skills or be able to act like a normal child. They will not receive the right childhood every child deserve. Victor and Genie are both examples of nurture. They did not have contact to humans and did not know how to live like one.

  4. 1. The difference between isolate and feral children is that isolate children get no attention nor love at all but feral children are children who learn their qualities from animals.

    2. The "Forbidden Experiment" reveals that Itard the study of Victor should not been called an Experiment since it was such a tragic story. This reveals that Itard's studies are being looked down upon.

    3. The researches who worked with Genie asked for Itard's help because he has dealt with similar stories. They both have no social skills and as were not raised by their parents.

    4. Yes, the parents rights over a child shall be taken away. In some cases they should because Genie's mom neglected her child by locking her up. If the parent does not acknowledge the child it should be taken away.

    5. Based on ferals and isolates five behaviors and attitudes that help humans function within a society is language being able to communicate, mobility being able to move walk around get to places, emotions letting people know how you feel, environment being able to know where you are and education being able to know what is going on.

    6. I think it was ethnical because monkeys are the most realistic animal relating a human being. Just as humans the monkey went for the mother's warmth and not for the food.

    7. a) A child needs a parent and should not be left alone or the child will never know how to survive on its own.
    b) Children who are loved and acknowledged have better social skills than someone who does not.
    c) Children need to be encountered with to proceed in daily life.

  5. 1. the differences between isolate and feral children is that isolate children are left neglected and are usually all alone with no parent to care for them or show them basic skills they need to learn when they are young. feral children are ones who are raised by animals and learn what they know from the animals that they grow up around.

    2. this reveals that the study was a bad thing because he treated it more like an experiment rather than taking it more seriously.

    3. the researchers would look to itard's work to help genie because both children grew up without learning the basic skills that they needed to learn when they were young.

    4. in certain cases a parent's right over a child should be taken away and not returned. some parents are not fit to raise children. especially if they raise them in unsafe environments or don't give them the necessities they need growing up. discipline is okay though, to an extent.

    5. five behaviors or attitudes that help humans function within society would be knowing the difference between right and wrong, having a language as a way to communicate, being able to feel emotions, being able to walk and eat like a human being does, and interacting and socializing with other people.

    6. it was ethical because just like a human child, a monkey needs love, care, and warmth from its mother to grow up correctly and survive.

    7. -children need love and care from their parents so they have good social skills when they grow up, and are emotionally stable.
    - young children are like sponges. they copy almost everything they see, so it is important that they grow up in a good environment that is appropriate for them.
    - children must learn a language so they can interact and communicate with others around them, this will also help them grow and have relationships with others.

  6. 1. Isolate children is pretty much self explanatory. They receive no attention and they are completely isolated from the outside world. Feral children are children that are raised by animals and they pick up animal like habits.

    2. The "Forbidden Experiment" says that the study was looked down upon because Victor was treated as an experiment and it was not fair.

    3. Researchers who worked with Genie sought out help from Ithard's work to help Genie because they were put in similar situations. They were isolated and they were not cared for at all, and it almost seemed like they weren't human.

    4. I think a parents rights should be taken away and not returned in cases like Genie's, because there is no excuse for locking up your child and isolating them like this. If she was not born with any disabilities, she definitely developed some because of the way her parents treated her.

    5. Based on the ferals and isolates, five behaviors and attitudes that help humans function within a society are language, emotions, mannerisms, proper mobility, and socialization.

    6. I do not think the use of the monkey's in Dr. Harlow's experiment was ethical at all. He abused the monkeys just as the human children were abused and it was not right to treat them like experiments rather than actual living things. Animals need love, warmth, and care just like humans do.

    7. 1. Deprivation of love, warmth and care from parents is much more serious than I originally thought, because of how it effects the child's social skills when growing up.
    2. Young children copy everything they see and adapt quickly, so they must grow up in an appropriate environment.
    3. If a child is isolated from the outside world, they will not develop correctly.

    ReplyDelete
  7. 1) Isolate children are people who have been kept in a small confined room with little to no interaction most or all of their lives. Feral children are children who grow up in the wild or are raised by animals.
    2) Itard studying Victor was called the "Forbidden Experiment" because it's illegal to leave a baby out in the wild and allow animals to raise it, Itard got to have his experiment without being in trouble because the child wasn't left by anyone traceable.
    3) It would make sense scientifically to compare Victor to Genie because they we're both neglected by humans and share little human characteristics, more like those of animals and wild people.
    4) The fact that the mother sued the researchers for neglecting Genie are almost laughable, she was the one who neglected her own child for 13 years and didn't give her the proper love or care. It's ridiculous how hypocritcal she was, obviously she was sick in the head and probably the charges we're dropped due to plea of insanity. If not the mother should be institutionalized and all rights to the child obviously taken away.
    5) Human's are supposed to have language, be able to move on their own (walk), be able to use the bathroom, react to sounds and smells and react to actions around them such as heat or cold and things they're touching.
6)I think it was cruel for the doctor to use monkey's and take them away from their mothers because all babies, of any species should be raised by someone of the same species as a mother figure. If a mother rejects her baby in the wild, humans should not interfere, but they should also not purposely remove a mother and child. Especially because apes have feelings and act to things like humans do on a remedial level.
    7) NATURE V.S NURTURE
    a) Nurture is how a baby learns to develop human like characteristics, language, love, feelings, reaction to hot and cold.
    b) Nature is based on instincts given to the child when they are born, they know they need to eat, sleep and drink. This can be moved farther to include Victor who didn't feel hot or cold, or at least didn't react to it because he had been living in the wild which produces extreme temperatures.
    c) Nurture to me is more important in a babies first environment then nature, which eventually becomes important.

  8. 1. Isolate children don’t have any interaction, so their social skills are usually frozen and they usually fail to acquire language. Feral children have interaction with animals they live with, just not human interaction. They act and communicate like animals, such as the child that was left in the pigpen did.

    2. Doctor Itard was probably doing something morally wrong in his study with Victor. The tests he was administering may have been harmful, or he might have just wanted to keep it a secret because it wasn't proper to talk about back then.

    3. Doctors that worked with Genie looked at Doctor Itard’s work because it was a similar situation, and they were hoping it would help understand Genie. They might have thought that it had ideas to help Genie learn language, and become part of society again, but neither really became “normal” again.

    4. In situations like the one with Genie, I think all rights should be taken away from the parents. The parents’ rights should be taken away based on neglect, endangerment, and abuse. Unfortunately there is no way to know what the parent is going to do before those things happen.

    5. Behaviors that help humans function in society is language so that the person can communicate, sympathy so they know how to treat others and maybe their children, and walk so that they can travel, and get around. They should also be able to sit and eat with utensils when necessary

    6. Dr. Harlow's experiment was unethical, because in experiments people aren't supposed to cause irreversible damage to the subject. His intentions were probably good, but the way he went about doing it wasn't the best.

    7. In Dr. Harlow’s experiment, it showed that monkeys would rather be in warmth and security than eat. Genie didn't learn to talk, because she was beaten when she made a noise. If she hadn't been beaten, and tied up, she might have been a functioning member of society. Without being nurtured, the child would grow up like Wild Peter of Hamelin, find no interest in others and never be happy.

  9. 1. Isolates are children who are isolated from all human contact where ferals are children who are raised by animals which is very rare

    2. It was called the "forbidden experiment" because Victor was taken in by Dr. Itard and Itard tried hard teaching Victor human traits

    3. Genie was also isolated like Victor from human norms like emotions, failing to acquire language and walking strangley

    4. Parents should be taken away because for a parent to lock their child in a room all its life, the parent obviously is not stable therfore the child should be taken away

    5. Emotions, language, walking, eating and interacting with other people

    6. Dr Harlows experiment was ethical because it showed that the monkeys went for the mother that was warm and comforting although it lead to the monkeys when they became parents become abusive and did not care about their child

    7. a) children learn from their parents and other children
    b) children who are loved by their parents grow up positively
    c) children who are not subjected to the world will not understand things about life

    ReplyDelete
  10. 1. Isolate children do not interact with anyone or anything, they stay in one room for years. Feral children is when children are being raised by animals not humans.

    2. The " Forbidden Experiment" reveals that Itard was trying to learn if Victor could ever act like a human but Victor could not.

    3. Doctors that worked with Genie would look at Itard's work because both Victor and Genie situation are similar. Doctors could have thought Itard's work could help Genie learn human Behaviors like language and how to walk.

    4. I believe that parents rights over a child should be taking away and not returned in some cases for certain situations. In Genie's case her mother rights should be taken away. She abused the child and left her locked up in a room. It does not seem as if she wanted a child. It counts on how serious the situation is. If parents can get help I think they should have their rights over a child. If a parent is abusive their rights should be taken away.

    5. Behaviors or attitudes that help humans in society is language or communication, they way a person walks, the way a person eats, the way a person reacts to something, and the way a person hear something.

    6. It was ethical because just like humans, monkeys need love too. Inorder for them to grow up and not be abusive they must be loved as a child.

    7. a. The love and warmth from a parent is very important because it affects a child when they grow up. They want to grow up being nice, caring people.
    b. Nature. When a child is isolated they grow up with no social skills like Victor and Genie. They had no one to care for them.
    c. When is a child is raised by animals they grow up copying or following what they did.

    ReplyDelete
  11. 1. Isolated children are not introduced into society until a later age, and are usually in small spaces so they are not able to walk, talk, or act appropriately. While feral children are raised in the wild and have no idea of what right and wrong is, they act as the animals do because that's the environment they were raised in.

    2. The "Forbidden Experiment" was when Dr. Itard took in Victor and tried to determine if he could ever exhibit human traits. Although he attempted to induce such behaviors, he was never able to and Victor remained like an animal for his whole life.

    3. Researchers looked to Itard's study to help them with Genie because for the most part, Genie acted like an animal. She did what she wanted when she wanted, and only communicated in forms of grunts (like an animal). They looked to the study to try and create a new way to deal with Genie.

    4. For the most part, if the child was abused the parent should not retain custody. If the child cannot even speak, walk, or act properly she was obviously not given enough care and should not remain in the care of their current guardian. We shouldn't let it get to that point however, because Genie wasn't even able to be a functioning member of society.

    5. Five behaviors that help humans function in society:

    (1) A strong figure to guide them through their early stages of life
    (2) Love and affection shown daily
    (3) A healthy environment, aka: clean, no drugs or whatnot involved, healthy relationships surrounding the child.
    (4) The child is shown how to walk and talk and will be able to be a functioning member of society.
    (5) The child is not shown any kind of abuse and is fed a healthy amount daily.

    6. Most people would agree that the use of the monkey's was ethical because for the most part they were treated with kindness. But to do such an experiment, Harlow had to take the monkey's away from their actual mother's and some of them weren't shown much affection. That would mess up anyone, including an animal and they didn't even have a chance.

    7. A) Children learn from their parents, their actions affect the child directly.
    B) Children need to be shown love and affection to be able to function normally.
    C) Children need to be taught how to act in society.

    ReplyDelete
  12. 1. Difference between isolate and feral
Feral children are children raised by animals, they are rarely able to overcome the years of abuse and neglect. Isolate children are similar in the way that they cant really overcome the neglect. Isolate children are put somewhere alone with no contact and just the amount needed to survive.
    2. It says that it wasn't easy and Itard wasn't able to achieve an improvement which is sad.
    3. Because they both couldn't acquire language, didn't show responses or reactions. Similar cases except Genie was isolated and Victor was feral.
    4. It really depends on the situation. A parents right should never be taken away unless they in any way harmed the child and should not be given back until proven they are ready to start new.
    5.-Language
    -Emotions/ Feelings
    -Being able to walk
-Being able to eat like a human
    -Human attention
    6. I think his experiment was ethical because humans and animals both need love to grow up correctly.
7.- A child/animal can not survive without having comfort and love from a parent.
    - Isolated children cannot function correctly because they have no one to look up to or teach them from an early age.
    - Any child not brought up the correct way will not be able to survive and learn the basic needs for life. If they are not taught them by an early age they will never learn.

    ReplyDelete
  13. 1-Isolate is more towards abused children that have been abused by a caregiver-and kept away from any outside human contact-Feral children are children that have been abandon and raised by animals-they live like animals etc.
2-This means that although we know about something its shames us so that we rather not speak about it-
3-They used Victor as the bases for all others that will come next-because these cases were so rare they had to have some sort of base for their study.
4-I feel unless the parents has acted in a manner of complete ill manner towards the children that the parent must be able to have their rights as a parent-if a parents violates certain provisions such as adequate food, education, health and shelter than their rights have to be revoked.
    5-being raised by a family
    having no emotions
    behaving like an animal
    having little or no language
    having no fear
6-In a way it was ethical because scientist needed an animal to study that had some if not many of the same feelings as a human-
7-nature is where you grew up what you know-street smart-nuture is the love you get from your family its the values and morals set from your family-for example gang members often join gangs why because its a sense of family-if these same gang members had real love and guidance from a family member they will tell you straight out they would leave their gang-to me nuture is more compelling is the battle between knowing what is right and what is wrong and who can teach that you family through example-

  14. 1. Feral children are raised by animals and behave like them and isolate children are kept away from the outside world with absolutely no contact.
    2. The dr. Could not make Victor behave like a human and get rid of his animal-like habits that is why it was called the forbidden experiment.
    3. Because they were both in similar situations, they both had no language and were isolated in some way.
    4. I feel like it is a very sad thing to take a child away from their parent but in some cases it is necessary if the child is being mistreated and out into isolation.
    5. Language, walking, interacting with people, emotions, and decision making.
    6. I think his experiment was ethical because it shows that everyone needs to be loved and needs attention and without it the child or monkey will become lost.
    7. If a child is isolated from the world, they will not know how to operate or live normally.
A child needs love and affection and if they are deprived of that when they are young, it will show through their personality and they way they may act distant or untrusting towards other people.
Children copy everything they see so that can also be the nature part in how a child will copy the language their parent speaks in.

    ReplyDelete
  15. 1) Feral Children are basically children that have been raised by animals and act like them.
2)The experiment was to see if Victor could act like a human but he could not.
3)They were both put in similar situations so they had language problems and felt isolated.
4)In some situations it is necessary to take a child away from its parent.
5)Language, Interactions, Emotions, walking and making decisions.
6)The Experiment made alot of sense because it showed that every human craves attention and care.
7)A child needs to be nurtured from the start instead of being a part of nature where the child will not come out normal. It is the parents responsibility to make sure the child gets all of its proper needs.

    ReplyDelete
  16. 1. isolate children often do not learn to speak or walk correctly. They become inhumane and fearful of society because they are not used to it. Feral children are raised by animals. They are not kept confined to a space but end up acting like the animal they lived with acts.
    2. Itard and his study of Victor was looked down upon. Society looked down upon the fact that Victor wasthe way he was. They also looked down upon Itar for studying him. This is why it was called the forbidden experiment.
    3. Victor was the only other case they knew of like Genie. Itard studied Victor so since they did not know what to do with Genie they looked to see what Itard did.
4.Yes, because if the parent is harming the child mentally, emotionally, or physically, the child's life could be destroyed forever. In order to help the child lead a normal and happier life the government would have to take custody of the child.
    5. Five behaviours or attitudes that help humans function in society are love, success, morality, civilized character (a result of laws) and structure. Interaction with other people also helps us function in society.
    6. No, he altered those monkeys forever. They will never act like real mokeys again. It was not ethical.
    7. a) love helps people grow happily. ( nurture)
    b) structure and society helps people act civilized. ( nurture)
    c) living things are always inclined to get food o matter what. ( nature)

    ReplyDelete
  17. 1. Isolated children are almost abandoned children basically, who weren't taught the basic motor skills of how to walk and do other things as a child. This is due to the fact that they are either abused or not nurtured to at the younger time in their lives from birth into age 4 or 5. Feral children are basically taken in by animals and raised by animals, but act like them.
    2. It was called the forbidden experiment because of the person Victor was and society also looked down upon ltard for attempting it.
    3. Both were isolated due to not having any language to use
    4. The child should be taken away when he/she is not raised in a good household with good parents.
Really any abuse that a parent does to a child physically or mentally to the point of the child not being able to have a normal happy life at home, then that child should be separated from the parent(s) and be put somewhere better.
    5. Having interaction with others in our society from other cultures will help develop the overall person you are. That's why although you don't judge someone by appearance from afar, you can make a depiction of the person they are due to those they are around all the time.
    6. It was not ethical and it was wrong. I don't believe in using innocent animals for these experiments, if humans really want to know why we do the things we do or find out any research, they should perform the experiments on themselves. We're a different species and I know that doesn't play a big role in this particular experiment but it's just wrong.
    7. A) Love helps any person grow happily (nurture)
    B) structure and society help people act like civilized individuals (nurture)
    C) any child not brought up with proper care will not be able to understand the basic things they need in life

    ReplyDelete
  18. 1) Isolate children are neglected by their parents. They aren't taught basic functions such as walking and speaking. Most often they are locked away and ignored, they don't get the proper care and attention they need. Feral children are raised in the wild by animals and learn to mimic that behavior.

    2) The "Forbidden Experiment" was named such because it's looked down upon that Dr. Itard treated Victor as an experiment and not as a person.

    3) The researchers who worked with Genie referred to Itard's work because Genie and Victor were similar. Though they were brought up in different conditions, they both lacked emotion and language. It was said that they both seemed to have their social development "frozen". Genie was considered to be the same as Victor, only a more modern case.

    4) I strongly believe that in some cases it's completely necessary to take a child from their parents and not allow the parent to regain custody. Genie's case is just one example of that. When the abuse is so severe and it is obvious that the parents do not have the proper skills to be raising the child, they should not be allowed to keep the child. In Genie's case, foster care would have been better than being locked away and ignored. I know sometimes in foster care or adopted homes children are still in harsh environments, but in cases like Genie's a lot of things are better than what she had.

    5) Five behaviors or attitudes that help humans function are
    -love/affection
-a safe environment to live in
-someone to teach the child basic functions such as walking and talking
    -socialization
-proper care such as food, water and hygiene.

    6) Dr. Harlow's use of monkeys as experiments was unethical. Just because the animals aren't human, doesn't mean they aren't living creatures that need love, warmth and care. He altered those monkeys for the rest of their lives, they became fearful in the outside world. What he did to the monkeys was really no better than the parents neglecting their children.

    7) -Children who grew up without love from a parent were not able to process emotions, they had little to no ability to feel.
-The children were brought up in the wrong environments and therefore were never able to be taught basic functions such as walking and speaking.
-Without love, these children could not proper functionally in society.

  19. 1.The difference between isolate and feral children is feral children are among animals and learn their qualities from them.
Where as isolate children are complete cut off from the world and cannot function.

2.The "Forbidden Experiment" frowned upon that Dr. Itard treated Victor as an experiment and not as a person

3.The researchers who worked with Genie referred to Itard's work because Victor and Genie were similar.Brought up in different conditions they both lacked emotion and language. Genie was know to be the same as Victor, but a more modern case.

    4. Children should be taken away when they are not raised in a good household with good parents. Any sign of a child not having a good life, they should be taken away from home. During a child life they really find who they are, and need to be shaped into a well rounded person to survive in society.

    5. Five behaviours or attitudes that help humans function in society are love, success, morality, civilized character and structure.

    6. He used ethical because just like humans, monkeys need love too. In order to grow up to be a well rounded person and survive in society a child must grow up with love and compassion.

    7. Children who grew up without love dont really know how to process emotions well, because they were never taught how to deal with certain circumstances.
